Brassica Foundation

Promoting Cancer Prevention & Protection

The Brassica Foundation was established to promote cancer prevention and protection, with an emphasis on dietary approaches. The principal work of the Brassica Foundation is to:

  • Focus attention on cancer chemoprotection as a primary strategy in the war against cancer; and
  • Attract funds to support chemoprotection research with special emphasis on dietary approaches.

The Brassica Foundation is a Maryland corporation not for profit and without capital stock. It is a 510(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.

The Brassica Foundation derives its income from donations by individuals and organizations and a portion of the proceeds of sales of Brassica Tea, Coffee and TrueBroc®.

Mission

The Brassica Foundation was established to promote cancer prevention and protection, with an emphasis on dietary approaches. The principal work of the Brassica Foundation is to:

  • Focus attention on cancer chemoprotection as a primary strategy in the war against cancer
  • Attract funds to support chemoprotection research with special emphasis on dietary approaches

Rationale

Cancer protection has not received the funding it deserves. Cancer research has concentrated almost exclusively on causes and treatment. The founders of the Brassica Foundation believe the primary strategy in the war against cancer must be to identify and develop the means of arresting or reversing the disease before it becomes clinically evident.

The Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chemoprotection Center has demonstrated the presence of anticancer chemoprotective compounds in certain vegetables. These results require more research and development to:

  • Develop methods for standardizing the chemoprotective activity of edible plants
  • Conduct clinical studies to demonstrate the chemoprotective efficacy of these plants.

Operation

The Foundation was established by Dr. Paul Talalay, John Jacob Abel Distinguished Service Professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and colleagues at the Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chemoprotection Center at Johns Hopkins, whose research demonstrated the presence of anticancer protective compounds in certain vegetables, notably among the brassica family.
